Like many English watercolorists seeking fresh material, the Bristol-based Pyne made the short Channel crossing from Dover to Calais in France in 1832.
His view along the rue Notre Dame in the port city's old quarter included two major landmarks: the medieval Tour du Guet, which served as both a lighthouse and a lookout toward the English Coast and, at the end of the street, the city hall with its ornate belfry.
