Weavers in some regions of the Caucasus made flat woven rugs using the soumak technique, where patterning wefts are wrapped around warp threads. In this piece, the colored weft was wrapped over four warps on the top side and passed back under two. The sequence was repeated until a different color was needed.

The layout of this rug, a large central medallion alternating with smaller octagonal shapes, typifies this region's soumak rugs.
