Rugs with bold patterns, vibrant colors, and long pile woven in south central Caucasus are generally referred to as Kazaks. Kazak rugs were very popular exports to the West during the late 1800s.
Small, highly abstracted animal forms, bands of plain weave at the top and the knotted fringe at the bottom are characteristic of rugs from this area. The diamond-shaped medallion designs may be abstracted versions of a floral form from an earlier prototype or may have been inspired by Turks migrating west from central Asia.
