On the spot at Finchale to which St. Godric had been led by a vision around 1110, a priory was established in the 13th century as a hermitage for the busy monks of Durham four miles up the river Wear.  It had been abandoned for 250 years when Munn sketched there in September 1805 on his second trip to Yorkshire in the company of fellow artist John Sell Cotman.

On the basis of such picturesque views, Munn was among the first elected to the Society of Painters in Water-Colours later that year.
