The J.M.W. Turner Suite

Turner gave this, his first oil painting to his resident housekeeper of forty years Hannah Danby who bequeathed it in 1853 to Turner's admirer, the critic John Ruskin.

"It is to me, who knew him in his age, entirely the germ and virtually capable contents of the man I knew" wrote Ruskin, but only guessing at the date, had the Latin label read:  "J.M.W. Turner, by his hand, in the fourth lustrum of life [between 16 and 20]."
