Tent bands range in size from 40 to 48 feet long, depending on the size of the tent. In the past, when these bands were removed from the tents and traded, they were often cut into smaller pieces. This was done either to remove badly stained and deteriorated areas or to reduce them in size so they would sell easily.
The narrow width, fine workmanship and natural dyes in this piece are typical of an early type of tent band. It is now about half of it's orignal length.
Anne Caroline Crane; given to IMA January 15, 1954.
