Ōbun was the great-grandson of Maruyama Ōkyo and the fifth generation head of the Maruyama School. Along with tigers executed in a very naturalistic manner, the Maruyama repertory also included more stylized depictions like these two, which resemble overgrown cats. In these paintings, the primary emphasis is on design.
