Part of the generation that came of age following the rise of Abstract Expressionism, James Bishop continued to explore the expressive possibilities of form and color. He chose to work with dramatically reduced painterly forms, as exemplified in the delicate washes of white paint in the present work. Although the composition is firmly abstract, its sense of space and form also suggest subtle architectural references. Bishop moved from New York to France in the late 1950s, and as a result became better known in Europe than the U.S. for many years.
