Painted drinking vessels were used by high status people and were often buried with them, holding nourishment for the afterlife.

Vessels often depict scenes of Maya religion and history, and sometimes include hieroglyphic writing.

The palace scene painted on this vessel shows a ruler sitting on a throne, wearing a jade necklace and a headdress with exotic feathers.
