To juxtapose London street life with the medieval palace, Turner opted for an unorthodox viewpoint, away from the riverfront, leaving but a glimpse of the Thames as it passes under Westminster Bridge.

This watercolor was Turner's first to be accepted for the Royal Academy's annual exhibition in April 1790, the month he turned fifteen.
