Dayes formulaically laid in shadows with gray ink, sunlight with yellow and then overlaid his washes with local color.  His apprentice, Thomas Girtin, and young Turner followed this formula until about 1795.

Dayes' invariably serene landscapes are difficult to reconcile with his acerbic and possibly unbalanced nature, precipitating his suicide in 1804.
