Turner's friend and greatest rival, Thomas Girtin, was one of the ten thousand British who took advantage of the brief peace between England and Napoleon's France and visited Paris between October 1801 and May 1803.

Perhaps envisioning a panorama of Paris similar to the one he had made of London, Girtin made twenty panoramic drawings from various points in the French capital, which were published in print form.
