In 1789, Turner received his only formal lessons in landscape drawing from Thomas Malton, Jr., a specialist in drawing architecture with accuracy and in dramatic perspective.
Turner mastered these lessons and employed such shortcuts in this drawing as detailing only one repetitive Gothic detail and noting the names of adjacent merchants for future inclusion in his watercolor.
Today the IMA is open 11 am to 9 pm. ADMISSION IS FREE.
