In many parts of West Africa, women weave textiles on vertical looms for domestic use. This type of wrapper, with elaborate weft inlays, would have been worn during weddings, market day and other special occasions. This type of garment is made of two woven panels that are sewn together to produce a wider cloth. The patterns are created by insertion of narrow colored threads onto the surface of the cloth. The motifs include such everyday objects as animals, umbrellas, combs, stools and hourglass drums.
