Glen, first of all, thanks for reading the blog.
I prune in late winter or early spring, ideally before the buds break dormancy.
You can generally cut the smokebush back to two feet or less and they are fine, except........ expect little or no flowering. You get a fuller plant if you have multiple stems.
You could prune every other year which would control size some and give you flowers on the off years.
Some years I get a few flowers even when I have cut back hard.
Just do a little experimenting. That's what gardening is all about.

Hello there,

Just bought a 2 ft royal purple. I have unsuccessfully searched the web trying to find answers to the following concerns: what is the best time to cut down the branches without affecting the new blooms? How much can I cut or how far from the ground yet without affection the bloom rate? your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You should also give kudos to yourself for just bein' plain awesome!
