Confessions of a Plant Slut – Part 1 (Yes, I Know I Have a Problem)

So I have a little problem. Big deal. Ya think you got it all together? Ha! You ain’t so perfect. You can go around acting like “Little Miss Goody Two Shoes” all you want. I know the truth. The only difference between us honey is I tell the truth. I’m a plant slut and not ashamed of it. I’m like Ado Annie in Oklahoma!, I just cain’t say no.

I know I try to grow too many things but what are you gonna do? There’s so much stuff out there. Eggplant, cotton, sedges, magnolias, peppers, bananas, elephant ears, lantana, variegated corn, and cannas. Ooooooo, my, my, my. Read the rest of this entry »

Indy welcomes Tyler Green

Tyler Green to speak at Central Library

Tyler Green

You may recall a few mentions of Tyler Green here on our blog.  He is the author of the distinguished art blog Modern Art Notes (MAN).  Waves of giggles and high-fives have radiated through IMA each time we get a mention among the national heavyweights featured on MAN (Except this recent one, which we internalized as an interesting challenge, emboldening our collective spirit).

So you can only imagine the excitement now that he is in Indy.  He will be giving a talk at the Central Library tonight entitled, “Ten Things I Hate About Contemporary Art.” This visit has been organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art.

To borrow a quote from IMCPL’s description of the program, the Wall Street Journal called MAN, “the most influential of all visual arts blogs.”  So I hope you are already checking your calendar, because this is an event not to be missed!  I hope to see many IMA blog readers there! Come say hi and collect a free IMA Blog t-shirt!  (While supplies last, of course!)

The details: Central Library (40 E. St. Clair St.), 7 PM, FREE  For more information visit IMCPL website www.imcpl.org.

Front Page Appeal

A quick glance at the front page of your local morning newspaper may stir powerful emotions of curiosity, pride, joy, anger, sadness or any other sentiment depending on the day. Just as art purposefully conjures emotion and seeks to grab our attention, so do newspaper headlines and front page layout. It is, in an immediate sense art. Often this type of newsprint is passed down from generation to generation much like an exceptional work of art. With better technology, newspapers are able to use advanced layout and design, creating a front page that not only has visual appeal but also sells.

On November 5, the day after the 44th Presidential election, newspaper subscribers opened their front doors to a newly printed piece of history. Pedestrians gazed at historic headlines in newspaper boxes, ranging from President-elect Barak Obama’s campaign slogans to civil rights themes, to a single name. The Newseum features 724 front pages from 66 countries in their online feature “Today’s Front Pages” Wednesday, November 5. If you were curious to know Oprah’s favorite…the Chicago Sun-Times front page with the headline “Mr. President”. Read the rest of this entry »

Politics, Technology and Rock n’ Roll

Did you know 73% of Americans use the internet at least occasionally? That is a lot of people! So using texting, email, blogs, social networks, etc. for politics was an obvious and very smart decision. Read the rest of this entry »

A letter from Type A

Dear IMA Team and Readers of the Blog,

We’ve been wanting to write a short note to you all ever since the evening of the IMA’s 125th Anniversary Gala. What a night! A great show of energy and commitment to the museum, a rare chance to spend time with a brand new, permanent work from a major living artist and really just a great party.
