Even outside of the museum realm, organizations, both for profit and nonprofit, are learning how to deal with such matters. Your guidelines offer great suggestions. Many users of social media have a hard time knowing where to draw the line between personal and professional use. I will be sure to share this post. Thank you for your insight.

This is a great post that deals with relevant issues that a lot of museums are dealing with right now, including the Nelson-Atkins. Thank you for posting your blog guidelines and for the great resources about other social media. I will be at Museums & the Web next week and look forward to hearing how other institutions are handling these topics. Also looking forward to the reception at IMA on Friday. I hope to meet with some of your fantastic bloggers!

Hi, Jason. I think you're absolutely right and I think that a fear of stifling creativity is big part of the reason that museums are so cautiously approaching the topic of a policy. I’d like to think that institutional conversations about the issues would generate enough awareness to prevent the need for policies. As far as personal accounts go, we should be able to say just be smart about what you’re posting because you don’t things to reflect poorly on you OR the museum – but there are some who would argue that this might not be preventative enough.
