As one of those people "irritated by typos," I have to say they bother me less than outright grammatical errors.

Please tell me your first sentence was intentionally bad.

"...there was lots of typos in it."

This is harsh, but blatant typos communicate a sense of immediacy, whereas grammatical errors just make one sound unintelligent.

Proper grammar and the absence of typos go a long way in convincing the reader that the author is competent and able to construct a written opinion that is worth taking the time to read and digest.

We have, after all, nothing to judge you by but your words.

And honestly, errors don't take that long to correct.

Ain't hatin', just statin'. :-)

Maybe you could subscribe to the OED Word of the Day... lol. http://www.oed.com/cgi/display/wotd
Actually I think that's a good idea for everyone!

Nice article and blog post Richard. Enjoyed them both. The content of the message and the ideas is more important than a few typo's. We really need to see beyond the superficial and down to what's really important. And that is obviously the conservation of cultural heritage and any ideas (such as these Web 2.0 ones) that may assist in that process.

So, thanks for putting the time and effort into researching and writing the article.

Cheers, Dan.

Thanks, Jessie, for your kind comment.

You're point about accessibility is a hugely important one. Also, think of the ways a few blog have opened our eyes to interesting conservation projects.

The Antarctic Conservation Blog:
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/earth/antarctica/blog/

Ellen Carrlee's blog about her job in Alaska: http://ellencarrlee.wordpress.com/

And, thanks, Noah, for your good reminder of your book. Your website linked to an Elementary school in Arizona ... seems kind of funny.

This is a decent online dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com/), but I'm holding out for the OED to become available.

Richard,

I reviewed your article; while the writing demonstrates an exceptional level of intellectual understanding of your subject, there is much to be desired in your spelling. I recomend a daily pratice of spelling and writing with my dictinary. It has served many scholars well. It is worthy of your time to browse through it often. It will improve you standing among your literate peers.

Regards,

Richard, Nice article in CeROArt, nice thoughts about typos and how we could all benefit from admitting mistakes. One other thought about all this conservation information becoming available on-line is how internationally available it suddenly becomes. For conservators that don't have access to books - but do have access to the Internet - there is more and more good information to help share develop the ideas and approach of conservation worldwide.
