Kiss the Rain

Yeah! Another Horticulturist has become a blogger. I just love watching my little seedlings grow and blossom into their full potential. This week Jim Kincannon posts his first IMA blog. Jim is not only a great Horticulturist but he also is the catalyst for us having entire conversations based on song lyrics. You won’t find that in other departments I bet. My hope is we will hear from Jim of Geoff (or Katie or Patty or Chad or ….) every other week opposite my weeks. Eventually we will get a bio up for each and they can quit posting under my blog. I don’t mind them being under my thumb, but under my blog? No way.

Uh-oh, somebody left the blog-o-graph in the Division of Environmental and Historic Preservation unsecured! Well, I am done cleaning Irvin’s and Geoff’s garden trowels so let’s see how this thing works…

Summer Nights Movie Critic: Part Two

Ray Pawulich

The following post was written by Ray Pawulich. Ray currently lives in Indianapolis. He went to film school for a couple years, so he thinks he knows what he’s talking about. Here’s part two of his series on Summer Nights here at the IMA.

Every so often, someone tells me I remind them of John Cusack. When this comes from strangers, it’s kind of flattering. But when it comes from your own mother, it can be a little disturbing.

Such was the case in the spring of 2000 when my mother called to let me know she’d seen a movie called High Fidelity and insisted I’d enjoy it too. According to her, Cusack’s character in the film, Rob Gordon, was “just like” me.

On the surface, this was not a very complimentary observation. After all, Rob Gordon is no Lloyd Dobler, the tried-and-true romantic Cusack played in Say Anything. Nor is Rob as cool as Martin Blank, Cusack’s detached-yet-vulnerable hitman from Gross Pointe Blank. Instead, he’s neurotic, jealous, self-defeating, co-dependent and completely incapable of committing to anything. (Thanks mom.)

The Art World’s Nancy Drew

At a recent dinner party, a friend expressed his fascination with provenance (Defined: the history of ownership of a valued object or work of art). He was astonished that if he bought something as a bona fide purchaser, or in good faith, that he may someday be required to return it without compensation if it was found to be a valuable cultural relic that was stolen, looted or untrue in record of ownership. I, on the other hand, was astonished that this concept seemed so unfamiliar to him.

And perhaps this is why we began a series of articles in the IMA’s magazine on the provenance of important works in the Museum’s collection, written by Annette Schlagenhauff. As the IMA’s Associate Curator for Research, Annette has spent years tracing the paths of works of art from the artists’ hands to the walls of the IMA. The stories are fascinating and not without moral ambiguities and missing pieces. Read the rest of this entry »

Oh No, It’s the 80’s Again!

One of my all-time favorite 80's movies, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

One of my all-time favorite 80's movies, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

I want to shave lines in my head. It seems like it might be too soon… but maybe that’s just me. Aaaah the 80’s… the decade you either love or hate. Maybe you even love to hate it… regardless, you’ve probably noticed that several things you thought were cool, but then decided were lame are now cool again. If you weren’t around in the 80’s I bet you wish you were. I’m a huge fan of 80’s fashion and design, so please, new generations be careful not to abuse the high-tops (oops, too late) and remember to unravel your tight rolled jeans at night. Don’t worry about unlacing your sneakers, they should already be unlaced… and if they are not, you fail. Yes, even mullets are hip again. Tron is about to be remade. Garbage Pail Kids are back on the shelves. Soon Max Headroom will be making his way back to your tube… that’s my prediction anyways. Call me out on it if I’m wrong. Even food and beverages are following the same trend…. Pepsi throwback anyone? Yes, it was delicious… I’m still waiting on New Coke though. Hello Kitty is bigger than ever and Transformers is in the movie theaters. Remember ‘The Dark Crystal’? Yeah, well the sequel is in production. I feel like I’m in a time warp but I think I like it.
