About the content:

We launched in ’09 with 6 content partners- which was no small feat. But now we have 28 partners! This is THE driving force behind the website’s success- fresh material all the time, from around the globe. So, while having so much more content is a great problem to have, it’s a problem that needs to be solved. The videos have been bubbling onto the site at a rapid pace, leading to a confusing navigation and interface experience. You heard it here first, watch out for a new design in 2011! And let’s face it, the user interface could use a graphic refreshment at this point as well. I’m excited to get the new stuff we are working on out there. Stay tuned!!

About the technology.

The biggest thing that has changed in the past year or so is the release and adoption of HTML5 on web browsers, and smart phones. Equally as important was Apple’s choice to not include Flash on the iPhone (a decision I fully support). Problem is, we use Flash to deliver the video currently. This won’t be the case for too much longer! By converting our video player over to HTML5, we will be making the content a lot more accessible for loads of smart phone and iPad users. Currently, there is not way to stream videos onto a smart phone, so this will be a great new transition.

Oh, and then there are some new, top secret educational features we are working on that will dramatically change the way educators and students can consume all of the great content our partners have been so hard at work creating. But more on that later…

Here are three IMA events we have recently posted video of, all of which I saw in person. The funny thing is, in each case I noticed or appreciated something new while watching the video that I had missed during the event.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright joined us recently for the opening of the exhibition Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection. I was very excited to film her earlier in the day- she is an amazing person and a wonderful role model for women of all ages.

Even though I was live-tweeting the Project IMA: Fashion Unbound Fashion Show, I  saw outfits for the first time when watching this video- they go by so quickly I missed them during the live events! I also loved seeing the materials used by each designer. This show was so much fun!

This discussion, which was moderated by our Director & CEO, was recently summarized in an article in the Art Newspaper, Climate control: time to change the settings.

I also want to point out what a great job AIC and IIC have been doing with their blogs to let members know about conferences and current news.  Check out the AIC blog and read all of the recent posts about the Annual Meeting.  While there’s no substitute for actually going to a meeting, the amount of information the members of AIC are sharing through the blog is impressive.

Along with AIC and IIC, ICCROM has been using Facebook and Twitter to share current news and connect with a larger audience.  Even if you’re not a conservator, you ought to check out these pages and start paying attention to all of the discussions.

I took two of my children with me the other weekend when I came in to check on the installation.  Because they often critique exhibitions at the IMA and other museums we visit, I thought I would include a picture that pretty much captures what they thought.  So take it from Nolan and Maeve, this is an all ages show.

Tonight! Can garden design be a subversive act? At this Planet Indy talk, on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, offbeat garden guru Felder Rushing addresses “slow” gardening for cheapskates, alternatives to the oppressive lawn, and irreverent approaches to horticulture that are also more sustainable.

Rushing is a 10th-generation American gardener from Jackson, Miss., whose quirky cottage garden has been featured in many TV programs and magazines, and includes a huge variety of weather-hardy plants and a collection of folk art. Rushing is the author or co-author of 15 gardening books and co-hosts a public radio call-in garden program.

Something that could easily be over looked about the IMA’s web presence is the amount of social media the museum is creating on a weekly basis.

So in the process of the redesign, the IMA Stream was invented.  What is the IMA Stream? You might ask.  Well the idea behind the stream was to create a single consolidated “stream” of all the content that is being produced by the museum.  The stream contains up to the minute updates from Flickr, Twitter, the IMA Blog, press releases, YouTube, Del.icio.us, and Artbabble.  This allows visitors to quickly browse thru the latest internet offerings from the museum in one convenient spot.

The system was made possible utilizing a common internet standard known as RSS.  In a nutshell, RSS is a standard for sharing and syndicating content across the internet. Leveraging the power of RSS feeds we are able to programmatically aggregate all of our content from multiple sites into a single feed which is what you see when you visit the IMA website.

ArtBabble Video: Catherine Opie: American Photographer

Catherine Opie confesses, “I’ve never seen the work together before,” speaking of her Surfers and Icehouses series. Both share the common narrative of “temporary communities,” as she calls them. The exhibition provided audiences with an unprecedented opportunity to examine the many interconnections between her diverse bodies of work, which, as she says, are all characterized by “these little moments that are recognizably human.”
