Tonight! Can garden design be a subversive act? At this Planet Indy talk, on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, offbeat garden guru Felder Rushing addresses “slow” gardening for cheapskates, alternatives to the oppressive lawn, and irreverent approaches to horticulture that are also more sustainable.

Rushing is a 10th-generation American gardener from Jackson, Miss., whose quirky cottage garden has been featured in many TV programs and magazines, and includes a huge variety of weather-hardy plants and a collection of folk art. Rushing is the author or co-author of 15 gardening books and co-hosts a public radio call-in garden program.

It’s a big day! The IMA was just named one of the 10 recipients of the 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries. Indiana Senator Richard Lugar nominated the Museum about which he said, “The IMA provides the Indianapolis community with valuable arts programming, education and many special exhibitions through the exploration of art, design, and the natural environment. It is truly a treasure in Indianapolis and very deserving of this prestigious honor.”

The annual award presented by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) since 1994, recognizes institutions for outstanding social, educational, environmental, or economic contributions to their communities. According to IMLS Director Anne-Imelda M. Radice, the IMA was selected for the award based on the Museum’s “exemplary programs (that) respond to community challenges, positively impact people’s lives, and serve as models for the nation’s museums.”

National Medal for Museum and Library Service

While the award recognizes the collective contributions of the entire museum, I wanted to share just a few of the programs cited.

•	FREE GENERAL ADMISSION

•	VIEWFINDERS, a program of the IMA’s School & Teacher Programs Department that serves more than 9,000 third grade students annually from Indianapolis Public Schools and other school districts. Free family memberships are given to all Viewfinders participants.

•	IMA ACCESSIBILITY, including partnerships with the Indiana School for the Deaf and the Indiana School for the Blind, captioning on all IMA-produced video, large print text available in the Museum galleries, and assistant listening, accessible seating, and signing interpretation in Tobias Theater.

•	ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP, including the museum’s green design initiatives and ENERGY STAR award for energy efficiency – the first ever to be awarded to a museum.

•	ONLINE INITIATIVES, including ArtBabble.org, an online community of 19 (and growing) partner organizations created to showcase art-based video content.

Thank you, thank you to all those who helped to make this award possible. If Senator Lugar or the staff of the IMLS were here, I’d give them a big hug. IMA colleagues – Get ready, because I’m gonna be a high fiven’ machine today!

Congrats, ya’ll!

For the week of April 6, 2009, Phil's Pharmacy recommends Brainrules.net, crookedbrains.net, indyculturematters.org, twitter, botanicalls.com, artbabble.org and Dr. Dog.

BrainRules.net – A companion website to a book with the same name (minus the .net). On this site, Dr. John Medina lays out “12 principles for surviving and thriving at work, home, and school.” The site is video heavy and each gets progressively more interesting. The “Stress” and “Vision” sections are standouts.

Umbrella Art – Given the weather today outside the museum, I was pleased to stumble upon a collection of umbrella art put together by crookedbrains.net. As much as I like umbrellas and how they make me think of Mary Poppins/Julie Andrews, this freezing rain nonsense is harshing the good Spring cycling vibe.

IndyCultureMatters.org – The IMA is one of the cultural institutions behind this organization and is urging its employees to take off work to attend the rally that is happening April 20 on Monument Circle. Show your support for Indy culture and attend the rally. There is also a Facebook group.

Twitter for Plants and ArtBabble.org – Just came accross two cool examples of Twitter integration. The first was Botanicalls.com and how they are using the micro-blogging service to get status updates from plants. The second was the new ArtBabble.org page that now includes a feed of everyone on the Twitter-sphere tweeting about ArtBabble. I can’t believe I just used the word “Twitter-sphere.”
