This teen-produced interview with Joshua Mosley focuses on the artist’s mixed-media installation, dread (2007), which consists of a short animated film and five bronze sculptures that philosophically explores the human necessity to confront and apprehend nature. Mosley’s labor-intensive practice combines computer animation, stop-motion animation, digital sound, sculpture, as well as his own music and dialogue. In the film, an animated photographic forest is the background against which two characters–modeled on French philosophers Jean Jacques Rousseau and Blaise Pascal–hold a conversation on the relationship between God-given natural order, free will, and the human and animal conditions.

I remember looking at it the first time and being, well, underwhelmed by the overly simple design. But as one scrolls down the pages, one is confronted with nugget after nugget of outrageously interesting info. It’s about the content, people. One of the many descriptions on the About page reads: “An attempt to track and make sense of “material that connects the insights of science and culture, rather than using one to dismantle the other” (as Steven Johnson puts it).” I describe it as: clever, clever, clever.

ArtBabble Video: Artist Talk: Nic Hess

For the Hammer’s Lobby Wall, Swiss artist Nic Hess presents Automatic Crash Response, a mixture of images in tape ranging from tombstone- like monuments of several recently failed banks, animals, how-to exercise diagrams, a generic shopping cart, the USPS logo and more to weave a lyrical quasi-narrative left for the viewer to decode. Nic Hess discusses Automatic Crash Response, as well as his other works.

Hey, remember this post? It wasn’t too long ago that we heard the news that Polaroid was stopping production of its iconic instant film. Well, guess what? It’s back!

image from Flickr user * f l o r

With the help of Urban Outfitters and The Impossible Project, Polaroid film will be back in production in 2010. When Polaroid stopped manufacturing instant film in 2008, The Impossible Project bought all the equipment and machinery. This year, Urban Outfitters will release 700 limited edition sets of Polaroid cameras and one pack of Polaroid film. Eventually, they’ll sell film packs too.

Something interesting I noticed on the Impossible Project’s site was their mission statement:

The Impossible mission is NOT to re-build Polaroid Integral film but (with the help of strategic partners) to develop a new product with new characteristics, consisting of new optimised components, produced with a streamlined modern setup. An innovative and fresh analog material, sold under a new brand name that perfectly will match the global re-positioning of Integral Films.

If you simply can’t wait until 2010 (like me), Gallery Space at Space 15 Twenty in Los Angeles is hosting a month-long group show of Polaroid photography, in conjunction with the production of the film. Or you can always check out the slew of ‘fake’ polaroid apps like this and this. Now get to shakin’ it!

I got into a fight with my friend in public the other day.

OK, not so much a fight, as a discussion. And when I say ‘in public’ I mean on my Facebook wall.

It all started when I retweeted @anarchivist (see below) and then it ended up on my Facebook page too. Anyway, the ‘discussion’ played out like this:

ME: I agree. RT @anarchivist hates the phrase “social media.” all online media is inherently social even if you dont want it to be.

Ben: to be social is to have an understanding or acknowledgment between two or more people. so then simply watching a movie on line would not be considered social but definitely media.
Wed at 2:33pm

ME: but what if you can comment and/or share that video with your friends using FB, Twitter, etc?
Wed at 2:41pm

Ben: that is social. but watching the movie and commenting on it are two separate things. right?
Wed at 2:56pm

ME: but the fact that it exists online DOES mean that. The fact that it has potential to be shared makes it social.
Wed at 3:50pm

The argument ended there. But did I win it?

Let’s take a look at what good old Wikipedia has to say:

Social media is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. Social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content; it’s a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers.

I agree with Ben that the simple act of watching a video online is not social. But because of the way the web had evolved, now any media that exists online can be social media, whether it was intended to be used that way or not. An article, picture, or video is posted and you can share it numerous ways (email it, Facebook it, Twitter it, Digg it, etc.)

Or is my friend right? Are they two completely different things? Maybe the real question here is why are we so eager to label everything? The IMA is always on the look out for cutting edge ways to interact with with the public. Call them trends, call them buzzwords, call them The Next Big Thing… we’ve employed just about every ’social media’ tactic that makes sense (and it’s working!) So maybe it doesn’t matter and if it works, it works.

I’m not sure why anarchivist’s statement and the resulting debate got me so riled up, but maybe the ‘anythings possible’ sentiment of ‘all online media is social media’ simply gives me the warm-fuzzies.

Please comment below and help me prove my friend wrong, er… help us sort things out so we can look each other in the eye again.

Blog: CoolHunting.com
Matt is a connoisseur of all things cool, so I wasn’t surprised when he recommended this blog to me. ‘Cool Hunting is a daily update on ideas and products in the intersection of art, design, culture and technology…‘ I really dig the gift guide.

Just days before the opening of the exhibition “Kodachrome Culture: The American Tourist in Europe,” Kodak announced that it would discontinue Kodachrome film.

First Polaroid, now this?!

The slide film, known for its rich colors and clarity, has been available commercially since 1935. It now accounts for less than 1% of Kodak’s still-film sales. You’ve probably seen this famous Kodachrome portrait:

Sharbat Gula, Afghan Girl, 1984. © Steve McCurry

The problem is, Kodachrome must be processed by a method so complex that only one lab in America is still certified by Kodak to handle the film: Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas. Dwayne’s said on its site that they would continue processing Kodachrome through the end of next year. Renowned photographer and Kodachrome lover Eric Meola seems to think the transition was inevitable:

Before digital, Kodak was already shifting gears–moving away from the boundaries of KODACHROME (long lab times, fewer labs, a more environmentally friendly, as well as constrained, chemistry)

Promised Land, © Eric Meola

Kodak said that it expects the current supply of Kodachrome to last until the fall. However, if what happened with Polaroid film was any indication, it will probably linger around longer than that.

The National Geographic Museum will open a sentimental tribute to the film today in Washington, D.C. Nat Geo’s photographers began using Kodachrome in the 1930s, describing the film as ‘a photographic medium that changed the way we document the world.’

Paul Simon, any final words?
