Phil’s Pharmacy

Phil's Pharmacy

Phil’s Pharmacy prescribes the following links to combat Monday online anemia.

Digital Graffiti – Pretty cool link from Jenny that tells of a little resort village that lets artists “paint” their town walls with digital graffiti. And for you projection artists out there, Digital Graffiti is accepting submissions for their 2009 show in Alys Beach.

Skittles.com – This new Mars website for its Skittles brand of fruity morsels takes all your buzz worthy social media sites (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc) and uses them as replacements for traditional brand landing pages. Clever. However, add in a goofy peice of navigation, an equally goofy enter your birthday thing, the possibilty for people to spam your Facebook Wall and Twitter feed with garbage, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for frustration. Taste the Pain-Bow.

PostSecret – Got a secret you want to share with the web? Write it on a post card and send it to PostSecret. Check the blog.

Museums and the Web – is going to be in Indianapolis this year and the IMA is hosting a few events. Check out the agenda here.

IMA Employees on Twitter

phil-twitter-goodThe social media application, Twitter, has taken off. For those of you who don’t know what Twitter is, think of it as a blog that only lets you write about two sentences per post. It’s basically the “status update” component stripped out of MySpace or Facebook and people use it to give their “followers” little glimpses of their lives. And while we’ve known about this platform for over a year, we never started an offical Twitter account because we felt that maintaining another feed of IMA event news wasn’t compelling enough reason to make the effort. And since we’re never ones to jump on the band wagon unless we’re going to completely commandeer it, for now we’d rather just mention some employees that “tweet” on a regular basis.

Phil’s Pharmacy prescribes the following links to combat Monday online anemia.

Bent Objects – At a recent Pecha Kucha event held at Invoke Studio, I had the very fortunate opportunity to hear the very talented local photographer, Terry Border, explain his food-and-wire creations. Here’s a link to a relatively short YouTube video of Terry showing off a few pieces. And for those of you looking for a little more, a longer video from when Terry was presenting his work to a crowd in New York.

Website Grader – A cool little tool that tells you how well you’re website compares against others for things like inbound links, traffic rank, and Google PageRank. A cool piece of information that I noticed about our own site is that we have over 73,000 inbound links!

Behance Network – Is a site dedicated to “Creative Porfolios, Projects and Collaborations.” It is also a neat place to check out what the people on the Internet can come up with design wise. Here’s a standout gallery. Here is another.

Website Usability Analysis – Ever wonder why some websites feel so good? Recently, I’ve been thinking about website design and thought that this report on Apple’s site was a pretty good read. I’d be interested to know what we can borrow design wise from the Apple site. If we were ever to borrow.

European Design Facebook Contest – The week four winner has been selected. Up is the new picture.

Workstations of Popular Websites – Sometimes it’s fun to see where an artist creates their art. Similarly, sometimes it’s fun to see the spaces where web-content creators create their web content.

Aptera 2e Electric Car – Pixar fans ghost-ride the whip. Can anyone else see see Wall-e and Eva getting out of this ride? Three wheels? Less friction I guess and therefore more efficient. Now, if only Google would partner with a California based company on hoverboards.

Kern – If you’ve got an iPhone and love typography, check out this cool game. “The iPhone’s first design-nerd game.” – Boing Boing Offworld.

Wordle.net – Word clouds are floating in from everywhere and with this fun site you can form your own. Here’s one I made. Enjoy!

Tea with Dynah

DobbyIn my two short years at the museum I’ve come to know a few people. I’ve also come to know a few of the museum’s resident magical creatures. Over this last weekend, Dynah, the flirtatious Lilly House-elf, agreed to meet me for tea at Starbucks. The following is what we talked about.

Phil: Good morning, Dynah. How are you?

Dynah: Ay-Yay-Yay! I don’t see you anymore. What, you don’t have time for Dynah? The only one of you that comes to see me anymore is the one they call Peeper. You can’t stop by? Say hello to little ol’ Dynah?

Phil: You’re right, you’re right. I’m sorry. I’m in Public Affairs now and don’t handle Lilly House A/V anymore. But we’re talking now aren’t we? After all, this is your interview.

Dynah: You said you’d call. I miss my handsome green eyed shaygets.

Phil: Whoa, Dynah, whoa! Hands off. Sit. Drink your tea. Tell me about something. Anything. Have you been to The Toby yet? Seen a show?

Dynah: I have. But forget that little girly of yours. She can’t cook like I do…

Phil: Dynah, I’m sure you’re better. But can you elaborate on your Toby experience? Please?

Dynah: (Pouting) If you insist. I like the foreign films and a human of mine is going to sneak me into your Winter Nights this Friday. She says the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra is going to play along to “The General.” Oh, how I enjoy Buster Keaton. Care to join us?

Phil: I may stop in for second. What else? Are you excited about our next exhibition? European Design Since 1985?

Dynah: How many more questions do you have? I thought we were going to talk about us?

Phil: Two more, I promise. And I promise we’ll talk later. But now, Dynah, please, our next exhibition?

Dynah: Fine, but you’re going to talk to me later. Yes, as you know, I live in the Lilly House, and I have an affinity for fine design. I’m also close friends with James Dyson’s house-elf, Margaret. We used to play bridge together. She’s excited about the exhibition too because she has in her silly head that the show will have one of the very pieces she used to clean Jim’s carpets.

Phil: That’s interesting. She sounds lovely. Last question and you’ll have to forgive me, but fans of house-elves everywhere are asking, do you know Dobby?

Dynah: Sure I do. The putz dated my cousin.
