Carl J. Weinhardt Memorial Lecture
The Cranbrook Academy of Art, known as the cradle of American modernism, is among the leading design schools in the country. The school’s main building was designed by acclaimed Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. It integrated design ideas from the arts and crafts movement, creating an alternative to orthodox modernism that helped change the course of American architecture. Saarinen’s son, Eero Saarinen, was appointed to the Cranbrook faculty and would become one of the leading architects of the mid-twentieth century. Focusing on the design of Cranbrook, this talk by David De Long, Professor Emeritus of Architecture at University of Pennsylvania, links the elder Saarinen’s work with that of his son.
Supported by the Weinhardt Lecture Fund and presented in part by the Design Arts Society.
This event will be interpreted with ASL (American Sign Language).
