IMA Summer Camp 2013
Class size is limited, so register early! To register call 317-923-1331 ext. 218. All students must bring a sack lunch each day.
Staff will meet students at the museum entrance between 9:45 am and 10 am. Families arriving after 10 am must escort students to the museum art labs. Fees do not include parking.
Week One
10 am-4 pm

Art "A-Two-Z": Letters, Numbers and Symbols
Visit works of art created by Robert Indiana and see how he has changed the meanings of symbols, numbers, and letters in the alphabet. Then, make paintings, sculptures, and collages inspired by Robert Indiana’s work. Ages 5-7
Sticks and Stones and other Natural Wonders
Explore the IMA gardens and grounds (weather permitting) to experience the best that nature has to offer. Gather in the IMA galleries to see how artists have depicted natural environments or used natural materials to create artworks. Then, spend time creating your own works of art that include natural materials. Paint, draw, and sculpt works of art inspired by nature. Ages 7-9
"Mixing" it up: Experimenting with Paint
View works of art from the American, Contemporary, Asian, and European galleries to see how artists have used color, texture, and visual storytelling in paintings. Then, gather in the Art Lab to complete a series of paintings on paper and canvas boards. Ages 9-12
Week Two

Stamps and Patterns
Repeated patterns can be found almost everywhere you look. Spend a week making patterns with stamps, printmaking inks, and other materials inspired by visits to the IMA galleries. Work with fabric ink to make your own t-shirt, and create patterned paper or other projects you can wear or hang up on the wall. Ages 5-7
Drawing BIG
Explore large-scale works of art to see how artists fill blank canvases. Then, create LARGE works of art using a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials. Ages 7-9
Scratching the Surface: Printmaking for Fun
Make your mark by creating prints on paper. See examples of etchings, mono-prints, wood cuts, and lithographs, and learn how to make your own series of prints. Ages 9-12

Week Three

Time Travelers: Young Art Detectives
Join us for a week of art games and riddles as you solve art mysteries in the IMA galleries. Try to solve a series of visual puzzles using only your eyes and creative skills. Along the way create your own sketches, clues, and maps. Solve the great art challenge at the end of the week. Ages 5-7
Creative Cardboard Constructions
Check out the angles, lines, and curves of different works of art in the IMA galleries. Walk around sculptures and view them from all sides. Then, gather in the art labs to make geometric sculptures and containers using cardboard, glue, found objects, and other simple materials. Ages 7-9
Making Moving Art
Take a closer look at kinetic moving sculptures by George Ricky, Alexander Calder, and Tim Hawkinson. Explore moving works of art inside or outside the museum and examine other works that involve space, movement, and balance. Use wire, wood, paint, and foam board to create works of art designed to move with the wind. Ages 9-12
Week Four

IMAgination Stations
From artist creations made with dots to three dimensional shapes made with wood or clay, spend the week looking at works of art that will spark the imagination. Then, gather in the classroom to take turns experimenting with paint, colored pencil, clay, and more as you move from station to station. Ages 5-7
Art Play: The Sculpture Experience
Visit the IMA Contemporary Galleries to learn how artists take familiar objects and turn them into whimsical works of art. Gather your own materials like a giant box of wood or recycled treasures, and make a large-scale sculpture. Then, finish your creation with a colorful coat of paint. Ages 7-9
Painting with Style
Become inspired by the Contemporary, American, and European collections as you explore artist techniques and materials. Then, use water-based paints to create works on paper and canvas boards. Learn to stretch, prepare, and paint on canvas. Ages 9-12
Week Five

Sculpture for Young Children
Explore a new gallery each day to see how artists manipulate 3-D shapes, or respond to space. Build sculpture using wood, glue, found objects, and paint. Ages 5-7
Line up for Printmaking
Visit IMA galleries to see examples of printmaking – etching, woodcuts, and/or mono-prints. Return to the art labs to make a numbered print series, mono-prints, and post-cards that you can send to friends. Ages 7-9
What's so Funny Anyway? Emotion and Humor in Art
Find examples of works of art that are intended to be funny, express deep emotions, or communicate something in between. Share your sense of humor and display your expressive style in sculpture, cartoons, and other works of art using an array of materials. Ages 9-12
Teen Summer Camps
The Camera's Eye: Photographing People, Places and Things
Monday, June 17- Friday, June 21
10 am-4 pm

From painters to photographers, artists have used light to create beautiful works of art. See the world through the perspective of an artist by using both your eyes and the camera lens. Learn basic concepts of photography, digital editing, and printing photographs. Participants are encouraged to bring their own point and shoot camera. For those who do not have their own a camera, the IMA has a limited supply available. Ages 13-16
Video as Voice: Creating and Editing Film
Monday, June 24- Friday, June 28
10 am-4 pm
$235 Public | $195 IMA members
Explore the IMA galleries to see examples of visual story telling. Then, develop your own videos using basic techniques. Finally, learn basic editing to bring all of your work together. Share your work with family and friends on the last day.

Note:In order to provide participants with quality computers and equipment, IMA Technology Programs include a small equipment rental fee.
IMA Summer Camp 2013 Extended Hours Program
8 am-10 am: Pre-session (2 hours), $25 per child, per week
4 pm-5:30 pm: After-care (1.5 hours), $20 per child, per week
For your convenience, the IMA offers an Extended Hours Program for parents who need to drop Summer Camp participants off before camps begins and/or pick them up after camps end. Sessions are led by qualified staff and will offer engaging activities unrelated to the art camps.
Age-appropriate videos may be shown or, weather permitting, students may spend time in the IMA gardens or grounds. Participants are welcome to bring their own books to read or other non-electronic items such as coloring books. Members discounts are not available for the Extended Hours Program and registrants must sign-up for an entire week at a time.
This program is only available to children enrolled in the IMA Summer Camp Program during the week they are registered. Participants can sign up for either early morning or late afternoon sessions or both. Extended hour fees are added to registration costs for members and non-members.
