Sonya Clark is an African-American artist who is inspired by African cultures.  In this work, she focuses on the cone-like pointed forms of Yoruba king's crowns.  A similar form also communicates power in the neighboring Benin Kingdom, where the mother of a king wears a pointed headpiece adorned with red coral beads.  The surface ornaments relate to sequin-covered objects of Haitian religious traditions.
