Bellinzona originated in one of Turner’s sketchbooks. It features the road approaching the fortified gateway of the town of Bellinzona near the Italian-Swiss border in the late summer of 1842.

Upon the artist’s return to London, he detached Bellinzona and fourteen other pages from his sketchbooks, numbered them 1 through 15 on the back and showed them to his potential clients, not for sale, but as “samples” of subjects he was prepared to work up into larger, more finished watercolors if commissioned to do so.
