Brown moved from New York to California in 1891 to become the first art instructor at the new Stanford University.

Over the next ten years he made frequent excursions into the Sierra Nevada Mountains providing drawings and maps to the fledgling Sierra Club’s publications and making sketches that he would translate into lithographs in later years.

Mrs. Lucy Fletcher Brown; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1940.
