The Trojan War was the favorite subject of the Antimenes Painter, and it is possible that this vase scene depicts the funeral games of Patroklos, who was the closest comrade of Achilles during the war. The Greeks held athletic competitions with prizes after burials to honor the dead, and the chariot race was the main event.
