After three blustery weeks in Scotland making sketches for Scott's Provincial Antiquities, Turner returned to London on December 1, 1818.  The watercolor for Borthwick Castle was completed and turned over before year's end to the engraver Henry Le Keux who had a proof finished by the end of January.  It was published in the first part of the book in April.  Thereafter, financial difficulties and the slow process of translating Turner's watercolors into facsimile engravings stretched the project to its 1826 completion.
