The Copper-Plate Magazine paid Turner a modest two guineas for each watercolor and a small traveling allowance to insure that each sketch was made on the spot.

As a beginning artist, Turner accepted this employment and the reality that he was simply a hired draftsman with no say in his subjects, size or quality of engraving; prerogatives he would later insist upon.
