The exquisite cocktail dress and jacket ensemble is made of silk velvet, embroidered with bugle beads and sequins in an allover grain pattern. The jacket is decorated with a wide mink collar.
Prized for its’ warmth, softness, and glossy brown texture, mink fur, like other furs, has been valued as a symbol of luxury for centuries. In the 1960s and 1970s, however, the foundation was laid for the animal rights movement, which resulted in decreased sales of fur, but by no means ended its use as a status symbol.
(Doyle New York, sale: Couture and Accessories, December 10, 2003, lot 783) New York (c/o Jennifer McCloskey); purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art (2004).
