Throughout Melanesia, nuts from the betel palm tree are chewed with lime for their mildly stimulating effect. The lime is obtained from burnt seashells. Containers and spatulas used to hold or dip lime are sometimes decorated and carried as personal items. Containers made from gourds, bamboo or coconut shells and spatulas made from wood, bone or shell, often include geometric designs and figures.
