One of the most innovative fashion designers of the late 20th century, Issey Miyake is best known for his ground-breaking pleated garments.

This dress constructed from two circular pieces of fabric, exemplifies Miyake’s interest in conceptual design. By exploring the transition of flat two-dimensional cloth into three-dimensional clothing, he created garments that respond to the body’s movements.

Miyake’s dresses were made about three sizes too big. After going through the pleating process they would reduce in size, to a more accurately proportioned garment.
