Horses were one of Johnson's preferred subjects and are shown here with their Indian riders under the starry skies he favored.

Johnson began his career illustrating the Western novels of Zane Grey.

The artist moved to California in 1920, where he began painting cowboys and Indians.

The artist; Clyde Forsyth; purchased by W. J. Holliday in 1953; Harrison Eiteljorg purchased it in 1965; Eiteljorg donated the painting to the IMA in 1973
