Johnson began his career illustrating the Western novels of Zane Grey.
The artist moved to California in 1920, where he began painting cowboys and Indians.
The artist; Clyde Forsyth; purchased by W. J. Holliday in 1953; Harrison Eiteljorg purchased it in 1965; Eiteljorg donated the painting to the IMA in 1973
