In this farmyard scene, Bernard freely distorts the forms of the two women, endowing them with swollen, gently curving shapes. With a droll touch, he places the crouching woman in a posture that parallels the mound of hay behind her and echoes the stance of the pigs she is feeding.

Similar to his approach to composing a painting, Bernard outlines his forms with a dark border that leads the eye continuously around the elements of his image.
