The bowls are carved from a single piece of wood and are often decorated with geometric patterns, human figures or animals, such as crocodiles or snakes. The artistic quality of these carvings has made them popular in many areas of New Guinea. The bowls are traded all along the northeastern coast of New Guinea for food, tools and art objects.
