Deftly applied strokes of lighter ink with a few zigzag lines capture the thick rice straw wrappings that protect the trees. Depicting the bare tree itself takes only about a dozen ink strokes, and the solitary crow markedly fewer.

Undoubtedly swiftly executed, the scene is amply filled with the atmosphere of a bitingly crisp late autumn or early winter’s day.
