When Turner visited Haddon Hall in 1794, it had been abandoned by its owners, the dukes of Rutland, but was not yet a ruin.

Turner sketched from the lower courtyard, focusing on the medieval, octagonally turreted chapel and coloring his drawing with simple gray and blue washes as was his frequent habit at this time.
