In 1795, Viscount Malden, later Earl of Essex, commissioned from Turner five drawings of his palatial, remodeled estate.

"That portrait painting undoubtedly offers more certain employ than any other branch, of course there is less risk.  That landscape is not so much to be encouraged as it has not the advantage of being supported by self-love.  There is a sort of Landscape Portrait Painting by which a good deal of money is got, viz. painting views of Houses."
-Joseph Farington, 1799
