In a gaming house, the various gamblers are seen in various states of gambling madness—eagerness, despair, and apathy. The Rake, who has lost his wig and apparently his wife’s fortune, rails against his bad luck, while others sink further into debt by borrowing from the moneylenders present. The company is so absorbed that none of the players notice that the place is on fire.

William George Sullivan; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1930.
