Votaries could be either male or female, and represented different ages and stages of dedication to the gods. Dedication to the deity as a child may be related to coming-of-age rituals, which occurred at temples on Greek Cyprus. This piece dates from the Hellenistic period, when naturalism and perspective became stronger influences in Greek art.
