Following up on the great success of his illustrations to Homer, Flaxman was encouraged to illustrate, in a similar manner, the two texts of Hesiod, Works and Days and Theogony. These texts contain the most ancient literary descriptions of the origins of the Greek gods and the descent of man. Works and Days is fashioned as a dialogue between Hesiod and his young brother Perses.
