Here one of the Indian scouts is shown with horned headdress and shield, holding a coup stick.
The ultimate act of bravery was to get close enough to touch an enemy with a coup stick, let him live and survive yourself, then claim the opponent's spiritual powers.
The artist...Mrs. Oren K. Stafford of Waterloo, Iowa; Vose Gallery in Boston 1969; Harrison Eiteljorg 1969; donated to the IMA 1973 (one reference states "wrong painting")
