In 1888, Vuillard joined Pierre Bonnard in the Nabis, a group of young painters who saw their futures in the simple assertion that a painting was fundamentally an arrangement of lines and patterns on a flat surface.

"Intimism," a form of indoor Impressionism, was an offshoot of the Nabi aesthetic, and Vuillard was its most brilliant practitioner.

This interior, from the portfolio of 13 lithographs that Vuillard made for Vollard, features the patterned wallpaper and hanging lamp in the apartment he shared with his mother.
