In 1888, Vuillard joined Pierre Bonnard in the Nabis, a group of young painters who saw their futures in the simple assertion that a painting was fundamentally an arrangement of lines and patterns on a flat surface.

"Intimism," a form of indoor Impressionism, was an offshoot of the Nabi aesthetic, and Vuillard was its most brilliant practitioner.
