African art has a long history, which is difficult to chronologically reconstruct due to limited archaeological work and few written records.  Objects of wood and other perishable materials rarely survive beyond a few generations, and this wooden figure, hundreds of years old, is a rare surviving example.  However, those made of longer lasting materials such as stone, metal and ceramic (baked clay) provide evidence of the long history of African sculpture.
