Barye, the leading animal sculptor of Europe, studied nature directly in Fontainebleau forest and the Parisian zoos. His success contributed to the popularity of bronze, a metal well suited for the detail of small works.

Barye's image was a flattering tribute to the restoration of the French monarchy, symbolized by the lion.
