Renoir relished the opportunity to paint women and children. Many of his likenesses were not commissioned portraits but informal figure studies such as this one of a young girl wearing a leghorn hat.

Typical of Renoir's technique after the mid-1880s, the child's face and hat are clearly outlined, though the surface of the canvas shows the broad, feathered brushwork of Impressionism.
