On either September  3, 1833 on his way to Venice or on the 23rd on his return, Turner probably paused on his journey along the high post road that follows the valley of the Inn from Innsbruck, Austria in the direction of Barvaria, removed a small sheet of gray paper from the bundle he often carried in the pocket of his great coat and dashed off this view of the high cliff known as the Martinswand.
