In keeping with the taste in portraiture at the time, Mrs. MacDowall is posed in an informal outdoor setting and looks at the viewer with candor. The brown-toned landscape, although loosely based on natural observation, was painted in the artist's studio in accord with 18th-century practice. Raeburn's habit of painting swiftly gives this canvas much of its vitality.
